World at War HD!

The new iPad version of Pocket World at War has shipped and is on it's way to Apple! Finally. If all goes well it should be available in the next couple of weeks.

Goodness found in this version:
  • Larger mission map with no scrolling. Taking full advantage of the iPad screen.
  • Road and River movement. Rivers are especially nasty to cross when being pursued.
  • You can toggle the music on or off.
  • Rebalanced and retooled missions.
  • Brand new HUD and UI.
  • Better looking snow maps.
  • Increased unit counts in many missions.
  • Several major AI and pathfinding fixes that might increase the challenge a bit.
If you've played the iPhone version, I actually recommend you hold off on the iPad one. While it's the definitive version right now, it covers the same missions as the original iPhone release, and if you played the heck out of the iPhone version (and if you read this blog you must have), then you won't find a lot new yet. I'll be running a free promotion in a few weeks, so best to pick it up then. Enjoy the screens!

More on the way!

1.3 is in the works, with a new mission pack so large that I've created a mission editor so I wouldn't drive myself crazy entering numbers via spreadsheet!

In addition to the new update, the Pocket War team (by which I mean myself) has been given the green light from the powers that be (by which I mean my wife) to develop an iPad specific version of Pocket World at War!

The iPad version will feature all new missions, taking full advantage of a much larger battlefield provided by the screen size. In addition it will host many new features and a few needed graphical upgrades.

Last but certainly not least, I've started work on the much requested "Generals" mode for both platforms, that allows players to customise their army and improve their units between each mission. I can't say yet if this will fall in version 1.3 or 1.4, but it's coming along nicely. More details soon!

1.2 Suddenly Live!

Apple surprised me again! Version 1.2 went from "In Review" status at Apple to "Available" in about half an hour! Someone over there is really cranking. Patch notes have been posted, enjoy!

New Update 1.2!

Version 1.2 is on it's way to the iTunes store, and should be live in the next week or so. The new version features two new unit types, as well as the Eastern Front campaign! I'm particularly fond of Stalingrad, as it has a rather unique feel. In addition, there are also a number of bug fixes, ai tweaks, and other general improvements.

Full patch notes to be posted soon!

Version 1.1 Live!

Version 1.1 is now live, and can be downloaded from the App store. This update includes first pass on air units and a number of bug fixes and balance adjustments.

★  AIR SUPPORT UNITS
Air support is now available in many (though not all) missions.

★  IMPROVEMENTS
● Improved user navigation into cities and onto bridges. If you end a movement order in such a location, a waypoint is automatically placed at its center.
● Pathing improvements to mission 12, Market Garden. Should be better. Might be harder.
● Improved mission selection screen, as a surprising number of folks thought there were only 5 missions.
● Fixed a bug here you could retreat units out of the combat area.

Version 1.2 is well underway, and will feature the first major content update, including new missions, new units, and several new mission features.

Reviews and Updates!

148apps has given Pocket World at War 4 out of 5 stars!

Click for the 148apps Review!

More unit types and more missions are the most requested features, and will be the focus of the first two updates 1.1 and 1.2 (the map pack)! It looks like we are leaning towards the Eastern Front in the poll, by the way. Be sure to vote before the poll ends!

Version 1.1 Update!

I want to thank everyone for the amazing feedback and support for Pocket World at War!

UPDATE: VERSION 1.1 IS ON IT'S WAY TO APPLE!
If all goes well, it should be live in about a week. Version 1.1 attempts to address a few of the more common user issues, as well as adding in the features below:

★  AIR SUPPORT UNITS
Air support is now available in many (though not all) missions. You can call in air strikes to support your advance through Normandy, but they are limited and should be timed well.

★  IMPROVEMENTS
● Improved user navigation into cities and onto bridges. If you end a movement order in such a location, a waypoint is automatically placed at its center!
● Pathing improvements to mission 12, Market Garden. Should be better. Might be harder.
● Improved mission selection screen, as a surprising number of folks thought there were only 5 missions...

Work is also being done on a mission pack, which will feature more customised units than the Normandy campaign. The mission pack will be released as the second FREE update! Look at all that value for your 99c!
